Starmer latest: PM in crisis as Jess Phillips becomes second minister to resign

Starmer loyalist Jess Phillips has sensationally quit as a minister in yet another severe blow for the troubled prime minister.

The former safeguarding minister said Sir Keir was a "good man... however I have seen first-hand how that is not good enough", adding she was "not seeing the change I think I, and the country expect".

Her dramatic resignation comes hours after junior minister Miatta Fahnbulleh stood down and called for the prime minister to lay out a timetable for an “orderly transition”.

But a defiant Sir Keir told his Cabinet earlier he “will not quit” – and urged them to back him amid what has been seen as the biggest crisis of his premiership.

At least four members of his top team have urged him to resign, including home secretary Shabana Mahmood and at least 80 Labour MPs calling for a change of leadership.

There is mounting speculation Wes Streeting is planning to launch a coup, with Labour sources telling The Independent the health secretary could launch a bid as early as Tuesday.
